From the President
First, I’m wishing all our members, subscribers, and friends a very Happy and Hoppy New Year.
Secondly, I want to express my appreciation to our WASH Officers, Zach, John, Patrick, Zack and Allyson for stepping up and enthusiastically helping to make sure WASH has a thriving 2022, full of great meetings featuring our own tasty beers and the continued special camaraderie we have developed over the years. We had an officers’ retreat this past Sunday to discuss and upcoming events and such. We had many lively dialogs about our hopes and vision of this coming year. I think we all left feeling excited about the club.

I have a few requests to make of all of our members. Perhaps you can make some or all of these New Years resolutions. Please feel free to suggest activities for the club including venues for ourSuds Searches. You might consider hosting one of our monthly meeting. Officers are standing by, ready to assist and help fund your hosting efforts. Of course, I hope you attend as many of our events as possible. Remember….for the most, our Suds Searches are on the first Saturday of the month, and our regular meetings are on the third Saturday. January is a bit different.

The Suds Search is postponed to the second week January 8 due to the New Year Holiday, and there will not be a monthly meeting on the 15th, as we are having the Winter party the following Saturday. Speaking of our monthly meetings, we’d like to make them more pot-luck snacks affair, so the host can deal with setting up and providing the beers, and less on trying to feed hungry guests.

Finally, (and this is a biggie) please and pretty please be sure to RSVP when you are going to join us for any WASH event–it makes it so much easier to plan when we know how many attendees willshow up.
Hope to see you soon!
COLOR OF THE YEAR
by Zach

Color of the year: Very Peri

From Pantone:
Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit, inquisitive and intriguing PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri helps us to embrace this altered landscape of possibilities, opening us up to a new vision as we rewrite our lives. Rekindling gratitude for some of the qualities that blue represents complemented by a new perspective that resonates today, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri places the future ahead in a new light.

We are living in transformative times. PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri is a symbol of the global zeitgeist of the moment and the transition we are going through. As we emerge from an intense period of isolation, our notions and standards are changing, and our physical and digital lives have merged in new ways. Digital design helps us to stretch the limits of reality, opening the door to a dynamic virtual world where we can explore and create new color possibilities. With trends in gaming, the expanding popularity of the metaverse and rising artistic community in the digital space PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri illustrates the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa.
DAN REPORT FROM OREGON
by Dan
Greetings from Eugene!

First off, congratulations to the new board members.  Thanks for stepping up to take care of and lead WASH into the future.
Second, I hope everyone is safe and healthy and having a wonderful Holiday Season!
I haven’t been brewing much lately, I’m taking it easy on my back and my taps are still full (and I have a backup keg waiting already!) I haven’t been going through as much beer as I used to without my WASH friends helping me empty the taps.  We miss you guys! The Cascade Brewer’s Society is not having in person meetings yet, although an in-person Holiday Party was held and was a lot of fun.
Construction has started on our house. We are enlarging a bedroom on the first floor to be our new primary bedroom and changing a few things around.  The work is supposed to be done in April.  After that, the old primary bedroom will be the new guest suite.

Our garden was a great success this summer and is still giving me something to eat every day. Fresh Brussel sprouts, baby arugula, fennel and broccoli and frozen beets and beans. When the tomato plants started dying off, I picked all the green tomatoes and there are still some left, ripening slowly in the garage.

Wine Cap Mushrooms in the garden
Wild harvested Chantarelles
Mushrooms from the garden

Speaking of the garden, one of the things I did was to put in a mushroom bed, inoculated with some spawn I purchased online. I thought that I would take a while to get established and didn’t expect much until this coming spring.  To my surprise, it started fruiting after a couple of months. 3 times I went out and harvested over a pound in one day. Way more mushrooms than I expected!  The bed slowed way down when the weather cooled down, but I still get the occasional shroom or two.  I think that it will explode come springtime.

I ordered some plug spawn and have inoculated some oak logs with shiitake and chestnut mushroom. They are supposed to take 9 to 12 months to colonize, I’m looking forward to seeing what comes from the logs. I joined the Cascade Mycological Society and have been on my first foray, gathering chantarelle, hedgehog and candy cap mushrooms.  It was really fun climbing around in the forest, foraging for mushrooms. Mushrooms have become my newest hobby!

The chantarelles are delicious, the hedgehogs I found were too small to do much with but the candy caps were a total surprise to me.  They are fairly small, but you don’t need a whole lot to work with.  Their best use is in desserts and syrups. You need to dehydrate them slowly then powder them and use that as a flavoring.  My candy caps are dehydrating in a sunny window on Anne’s desk and give the whole room a wonderful maple aroma!  Candy Cap cookies coming soon! I have a lot to learn and I’m excited to be able to forage for my own wild mushrooms.
Enough for now…We really do miss you all.

WASH WINTER PARTY
by Zach
It’s been a couple years now that we’ve had to stow away the beer equipment and throw virtual parties, but that’s all behind us now and we are ramping up to throw one hell of a party this coming 22nd of January 2022.
  • WHAT: WASH Winter Party
  • WHEN: Saturday January 22nd, 2022 (set up 2pm) Party starts @3PM
  • WHERE: Chris & Dem’s House:
2179 West 20th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90018
We have had to make a few changes so listen up, here is the agenda:
  • Everyone has to be a WASH Member to join in on the fun at all parties before the day of the party
  • Everyone has to show proof of vaccination at the party or negative test two days before event
  • Wrist bands will be handed out once we verify you have a ticket to order beer at the bar
  • No guests, everyone will have to become a member of WASH
  • No ticket sales at the door, Memberships will be available below via an Eventbrite link or by purchasing one through Venmo
Links to both Eventbrite and Venmo are below. We have two options for WASH Memberships in 2022:
  • Single (1 person) – $30
  • Household (2 persons) – $50
* These memberships are good for the year of 2022 and get you into 2 parties a year, monthly meetings with food and beer, and a wealth of beer knowledge. These membership dues are also non-refundable and help the club organize meetings, parties, and newsletters like this one.

Some things that will stay the same:
  • Pot luck. If you can, please bring a dish, side, or snack for the party to share
  • Brewers will have their beer on tap to showcase new brews.
  • Food and Beer lasts all night until we scrape the last plate or kick the last keg.
A sign up sheet for both food and beer to bring to the party are linked below.
Please fill out what you will bring on either.

WASH at SCHF (Southern California Home-brewers Fest)
California Homebrewers Association puts on a home-brew fest every year down in Temecula where we camp, eat, and drink. It’s a blast.

WASH will have a booth, and our brewers will be making several different styles of beer to serve to the masses. Friday and Saturday nights we will have campfires, and there will be other beers to sample both nights.
If you want to join up, please let us know very soon…..We need a count on how many campers we expect to go camping at the fest so we can tell our camping neighbors Pacific Gravity by Jan 19.

The entire charge is roughly $75-90 for the weekend. If you decide to go, please be aware that the first $30 (camping reservation) is non-refundable, the rest will be due a few weeks before the event.

Please let us know your coming and how many are coming with you by clicking the button below.

Saturday, April 30, the main event, has homebrew clubs pouring 11am – 9pm; an almost limitless selection of homebrew concoctions! Some footage from the 2016 Festival can be found here.
